Seaford Town Council has made arrangements for compostable toilets to be placed alongside Martello Tower Esplanade – being installed by Compoost Solutions on Friday 7th July.
The toilets will create additional facilities for the seafront during the busy summer season. Additional toilets will then be added once the redevelopment of the Martello toilet facility starts - the redevelopment being scheduled for the latter part of 2023.
In alignment with the Town Council’s climate and sustainability goals, the Town Council will be trialling compostable toilets in the area which offer a green alternative to users. These facilities will be in situ and operate using a sawdust model omitting the use of harmful chemicals, which allows the waste to breakdown naturally and the nutrients to be returned to the soil as renewable fertiliser. This method also allows airflow and compost segregation, minimising odour and making compostable toilets a widely used method across the country for events and green spaces. The Town Council is excited to be piloting this scheme in the town, offering residents and visitors a greener and cleaner facilities solution. Further instructions on how to use the toilets can be found here.
The existing Martello toilets facility will remain open for disability access and baby changing facilities. The Town Council is thankful to Plumbwells Plumbing Ltd for its refurbishment efforts this week and also to the Chyngton Farm team for their support in getting the new toilets in place. All toilets will be monitored regularly, should additional facilities be required this will be reviewed and additional compostable toilets may be installed.
Works are scheduled for the development of the Martello toilets facility, with an expression of interest also going live for work to commence in October 2023 with completion due and reopening by March 2024. See the Town Council’s project webpage for details on this project and expressions of interest.
