Executive Support Officer - Maternity Cover : CURRENTLY AWAITING OUTCOME OF INTERVIEWS

Hours negotiable, maternity cover basis. SCP 26 - £23,866 per annum

Are you interested in how your Town Council works and helping maintain the smooth running of its day to day activities and office? Do you have experience in a Human Resources role and a strong administrative skillset? The Council is seeking to take on an Executive Support Officer on a temporary basis for maternity cover; ideally starting mid-October.

The role of Executive Support Officer provides corporate support across the Council’s activities, with a focus on the HR function, corporate governance and servicing committees. The role is a managing support role, so whilst not directly delivering external services seen outside of the Council, you will be pivotal in the day-to-day operations of the Council. Being directly responsible for the Administration Assistant/Mayor’s Secretary, you will also take on line management responsibility for the general office administration functions and civic functions of the Council through this role.

You will need to be a great communicator, whether over the phone, by email or face-to-face, with a variety of people and in differing situations. You will need to understand the importance of confidentiality at all times and be able to evidence knowledge of day-to-day management of an HR function, including recruitment, employee relations and performance management. Confidence and ability with report writing, writing of press releases and a logical mindset will be key in this role. You would be required to attend occasional evening meetings (around eight times per year) to take minutes; in the lead up to these meetings you will have played a vital role in creating and publishing the agenda and the writing of supporting reports.

Previous local government or public sector experience would be ideal but is not necessary if you feel happy to commit to spending time learning the (often unique!) ways of public sector working and Local Government policies. Town Councillors take on a four-year term of office, with the current Councillors due to finish in May 2019, when further elections will be held. You will be heavily involved with the preparation and induction of the new Town Councillors in 2019.

For the right person this is great chance to get involved with your local council. We are a small office and team, so you will regularly get involved in brainstorms and idea generating with activities, events and projects of the Council.

The hours for the role are negotiable up to 37 hours per week, across Monday to Friday. Being maternity cover we cannot be 100% sure on dates and will need to confirm nearer the time the exact length of the contract (plenty of notice will however be given). Ideally you would be starting in mid-October 2018. The role has been graded at local government scale point 26, the equivalent of £23,866 per annum.

The Council offers a generous package to its employees; as well as an above average holiday entitlement and organisational sick pay, there is an annual bonus offered to those with low absence levels, a subscription to Perkbox (an online discount platform), discount at The View restaurant & bar and Wave Leisure membership, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme, commitment to helping personal development and a flexible and friendly working environment.
